Crowhurst Park £10,000 Lottery Win!
Last year Crowhurst Park Cricket Club had continued success on the field, winning the East Sussex League Division 1, the Gordon Busbridge Shield, the Observer Cup and the U12 league. Crowhurst Park is looking to expand its reach into the communities it serves by investing in the infrastructure and strengthening its commitment to the youth section.
We applied to Awards for All for a grant to purchase a new high quality wicket mower and a new wicket maintenance system for scarifying. We were very pleased to be granted the full £10,000 we wanted.
Pictured is local MP Michael Foster presenting the cheque to club chairman, Michael Legg, surrounded by many of the youth cricketers.
This grant will enable the club to increase the number of youth sides from 3 to 4, now running at U12, U13, U15 and U16 levels. This supports a smooth transition from youth into adult cricket, where we run 3 Saturday league sides. The club is committed to paying for coaches to become ECB qualified, with L1 and L2 coaches already in place.
The ground staff are volunteers, working approximately 20 hours a week and the effort needed to maintain a ground is considerable. This equipment is vital to enable the club to function and grow.
The expansion of the youth section to 80 players has necessitated splitting the training into four sessions. Separate sessions for the U13s and U16s are on Saturday morning from 9.30-11. Training for the U12s (and all younger players) is on Sunday from 9-11, with the U15s from 11-1. All are welcome to come along to practice, train, learn and most importantly, enjoy the game.
The club is regenerating through its commitment to a policy of growing the youth section and providing a vibrant open club for all members of a very wide set of small communities. Crowhurst Park Cricket Club serves the villages surrounding Crowhurst and Battle as well as the local towns of Hastings, St. Leonards and Bexhill.
Over the last few years it has become apparent that the demand for youth cricket has soared and that the local club provision has failed to keep up. Many local adult clubs do not run youth sections and those that do are overwhelmed. Our expansion is an attempt to fill some of that gap.
The club has hosted school team competitions as the development of cricket within schools improves and this has led to a growing awareness of the club. Last summer we ran a three day coaching course, open to all. This attracted twenty five players, only half of whom were existing club members, as well as raising £450.
The social side of the club has also expanded. Last March the clubhouse was renovated using four man weeks’ labour and £2,000 worth of materials donated by club members. This improved the appearance and atmosphere at the club and many more people used the facility as a result, particularly at the weekends. The club performs an important social function for all of its members and a Saturday evening after the game when the sides return from their travels is an opportunity to maintain long established friendships between players in clubs across the county.
